1998 Legislative Priorities
- Support funding of additional high technology incubators on Long Island to
provide opportunities for growth in the technology fields
- Support additional funding for engineering schools on Long Island to
increase the number of graduates to provide new employees for our
technology businesses
- Reform unemployment insurance laws to reduce administrative and
employer burdens without reducing benefits
- Support the development or re-development of Nassau Coliseum and the
development of a convention center on Long Island
- Support a $25 million increase in the Affordable Home Ownership Program
to encourage the construction of affordable housing on Long Island
- Support a phase-out of the gross receipts tax on electric, gas and water
utility sales
- Support the repeal or phase out of the petroleum business tax
- Support the development of a competitive market for the generation of
electricity
- Support legislation to provide tax incentives for businesses to provide day
care and elder care
services at their businesses
- Support legislation to require all special district elections to be
conducted on the same day
- Support legislative changes in assessment practices to provide small
claims assessment review
proceedings for small businesses
- Support redistribution of Tourism Matching Funds to more closely reflect
the amount of visitors
in each region and the development of a dedicated fund for tourism
promotion
- Support federal legislation to allow for direct access to visitor
information centers from the Long
Island Expressway and the completion of the fourth lane on the LIE
- Support additional mass transit options for commuters including the Port
Authority light rail system to the airports and East Side Access project to
Grand Central Station for the LIRR
- Support legislation to eliminate the 8.1% tax on private laboratories and
hospital out patient laboratories
