Letter to Gov. Cuomo regarding new air traffic control facility on LI
Dear Governor Cuomo:
The United States Department of the Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration are currently evaluating the consolidation, replacement and modernization of the control facilities of New York ARTCC in Westbury and New York TRACON in Ronkonkoma. It has been reported that the new facility could be unwisely relocated to other parts ofthe state or to a different state altogether and thus your support is vital. It is not only critical but most sensible that the FAA's controller infrastructure remain on Long Island, which offers a number of viable sites in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties that wiII retain existing jobs and create construction jobs.
Long Island is the perfect home for a new integrated Air Traffic Control system for New York's airports. By keeping the operations on Long Island, it will save money for the FAA and protect the workforce of 850 highly-skilled employees in the most demanding airspace in the country from attrition and relocation costs. Moreover, it will generate construction jobs and boost the regional economy.
It is encouraging that Long Island's congressional delegation and both United States Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand have given their unified support for the new facility to be located on Long Island, a region rich with aviation history and a skilled workforce capable of implementing the New YorklNew Jersey redesigned airspace and the modernized technology. With the full support of New York State, we can help ensure that the new, consolidated facility is built on Long Island. Thank you for your consideration of support for these efforts.
