LIA Monthly Economic Report - Foundations for U.S. economic growth

The foundations for broader U.S. economic growth are beginning to take shape. Recent signs of economic strength included a surge in consumer confidence, growing strength in the service sector, strong corporate profits and a rising stock market. However, the March employment report was weaker than expected and economists are still awaiting convincing evidence that economic growth has become self-sustaining. Until this happens, the recovery will remain fragile and subject to external shocks such as rising petroleum prices and/or weakness in the global economy.
