Dear House Speaker Boehner and House Minority Leader Pelosi:
The Long Island, New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut metropolitan region is one of the largest economies in the world. This region is the most critical platform for American business and the largest contributor to federal tax revenues. It has been badly shaken by Super Storm Sandy, with extraordinary economic and physical damage that must be quickly recovered or we risk deeper, permanent losses. I recently testified to the urgency of our need for federal aid in front of the Senate's Small Business Committee. In my remarks, I stated that Long Island and our tri-state region has always been there to help other parts of the country in their time of need. It is now our time of need.
The House's decision to allow the current term of Congress to end without holding a vote on aid for victims of Super Storm Sandy is simply unacceptable. We urge you to support the emergency supplemental budget request submitted by President Obama and approved by the Senate without any further delay. We are fully cognizant of the fiscal challenges facing this country, but we believe that failure to expeditiously fund storm relief and recovery could severely weaken this region and worsen our nation's overall fiscal condition. Accordingly, we urge you to quickly pass the $60 billion in supplemental emergency funding for our region.
Thank you for your serious consideration of this most urgent request.
