Long Island Association Names Dr. John Rizzo Chief Economist

The Long Island Association has chosen Dr. John A. Rizzo, a Professor of Economics at Stony Brook University to be its new Chief Economist.

As Chief Economist for the region's leading business organization, Dr. Rizzo will be responsible for analyzing the national, state and local economies, and trends in areas such as labor, consumer spending and housing. He will produce reports that are critical information resources to the Long Island business community, including the LIA's Annual Fact Book, monthly updates on the economy, as well as periodic studies on various industries and facets of our regional economy.

Dr. Rizzo received his Ph.D. and Masters in Economics from Brown University. Prior to joining Stony Brook, he taught at Yale, Ohio State and Cornell Universities. Dr. Rizzo brings nearly 30 years of experience in the field of economics. He is an expert in health care economics, concentrating on hospitals, the health care industry and the pharmaceutical markets.

"Dr. Rizzo's background will be a significant asset to the LIA as the health care industry makes up more than 20% of our local gross domestic product, our hospitals are some of Long Island's major employers, our region is focused on attracting more pharma industries and the Affordable Care Act will result in considerable impacts to small businesses," said Kevin S. Law, President and CEO of the Long Island Association.

Dr. Rizzo's work has appeared in leading economics, health services, and medical journals. He has consulted for leading health care and government organizations, and has testified as an economics expert in cases involving the pharmaceutical and hospital industries.

"Dr. Rizzo has had a distinguished and well-respected career as an economist and the LIA has a long history of providing important and timely economic data and analysis to the business community. Thus, we are pleased to add someone of John's stature to the LIA," said Law.

A resident of Port Jefferson, Dr. Rizzo begins on September 1st. He replaces Pearl Kamer who served as the LIA's Chief Economist since 1995.

The Long Island Association (LIA) is one of the largest business organizations in New York State and the leading business organization on Long Island. Founded in 1926, the LIA's membership is now comprised of small and large businesses, colleges, universities, research laboratories and nonprofit organizations, which together employ two-thirds of Long Island''s workforce. The LIA''s mission is to lead and unify the region in order to strengthen Long Island as a place to live, work, and do business.
